How to open an MSG file

  1. Drag your .msg file into the box above, or click "Choose a file" — this msg file viewer works online and lets you view a .msg file without Outlook installed.
  2. The headers, body and attachment list appear below.
  3. If the body only shows plain text, that message stored its formatting as RTF — see the known limitation below.

Tested with

.msg files saved from Microsoft Outlook (desktop), covering plain-text and HTML bodies and regular attachments.

Check it yourself

The email body renders in a sandboxed frame with scripts disabled, so nothing in the message can run code. Open your browser's developer tools and watch the Network tab while you open a file — nothing is uploaded. See the full privacy page for details.

Known limitations

  • Some Outlook messages store their formatted body as compressed Rich Text (RTF) rather than HTML. Only the plain-text body can be shown from those right now — a note appears above the body when it happens.
  • Very large attachments can be slow to render, since everything happens on your device.
  • Embedded (nested) .msg attachments aren't opened automatically yet.

FAQ

Why does the body only show plain text?
That message's body was stored as Rich Text (RTF) rather than HTML — a common Outlook quirk. Seewhat winmail.dat is for the related fix.

Can I save what I see as a PDF?
Yes — use MSG to PDF for a downloadable, selectable-text PDF.

Can I open a .msg file without Outlook?
Yes. This .msg opener reads the file's format directly in your browser, so you can view a msg file without Outlook, an account or an upload.
