How to convert an MSG file to EML

  1. Drag your .msg file into the box above, or click "Choose files" (several at once works too).
  2. Each file is rebuilt as a standard .eml the moment it's read — there are no options to set.
  3. Download each .eml individually, or grab all of them as one .zip.

What the EML keeps

From, To, Cc, Subject and Date, rebuilt as real RFC 5322 headersMessages whose body is stored only as Rich Text (RTF) — see what winmail.dat is for why that happens
Plain-text and HTML bodies, both included when Outlook stored bothSome custom Outlook-specific MAPI properties (categories, flags, voting buttons) have no equivalent in standard MIME

Inline images, kept inline via their original Content-ID—

Tested with

.msg files saved from Microsoft Outlook (desktop), covering plain-text bodies, HTML bodies, inline images and regular attachments. The resulting .eml files were checked back open in Thunderbird, Apple Mail and this site's own EML Viewer.

Check it yourself

Open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and convert a file — you won't see it uploaded anywhere. Or turn off Wi-Fi first; this tool keeps working. Seethe full privacy page for what is and isn't collected.

Known limitations

  • Some Outlook messages store their formatted body as compressed Rich Text (RTF) rather than HTML. Only the plain-text body carries over from those right now.
  • Very large attachments can be slow to re-encode, since everything runs on your device.
  • Embedded (nested) .msg attachments are kept as attached files, not converted into nested .eml messages.
  • Outlook-specific extras like flags, categories and voting buttons have no standard-EML equivalent, so they're dropped.

FAQ

Why convert MSG to EML instead of just keeping the .msg file?
.msg is a proprietary Outlook format that mostly only Outlook opens well. .eml is the open standard (RFC 5322) that Gmail, Apple Mail, Thunderbird and this site's own viewers all read directly — useful for archiving, migrating away from Outlook, or opening a message on a Mac or Linux machine.

Do the attachments come through?
Yes — attachments are re-encoded and embedded directly inside the .eml file, not just listed by name.

Can I convert more than one file at a time?
Yes — drop as many .msg files as you like; each becomes its own .eml, and you can download them all as one .zip.
